The ALMANAC project (Reliable Smart Secure Internet Of Things For Smart Cities) is developing a service delivery platform that integrates Smart City Information System for green and sustainable Smart City applications.
The ALMANAC Smart City Platform collects, aggregates, and analyses real-time or near real-time data from heterogeneous sensors and actuators to support Smart City processes.
The key element of the platform is a middleware based on a SOA architecture supporting semantic interoperability of heterogeneous resources, devices, services and data management. The middleware supports various Smart City applications by leveraging on a communication network built dynamically by federating private and public networks.
Results from the ALMANAC project
The ALMANAC project officially ended on 31st August 2016. The result is a platform offering several components which can be used to develop and implement smart city solutions. Read more in our last newsletter.

Showcasing ALMANAC at Ecomondo
The City of Turin presented ALMANAC at the green technology event which is the largest showcase in the Euro-Mediterranean area for advanced and sustainable technology for processing and recycling all kinds of waste.
Watch a prototype demonstration of how to achieve dynamic waste collection based on sensors communicating fill levels and citizens reporting waste issues.
Deployment of the waste management application in Turin
On 28th September, the City of Turin started testing technologies for two underground waste containers. By installing an electronic locking system for unsorted waste and sensors monitoring the fill levels of the containers, Turin is hoping to optimise the waste collection and to motivate users to increase the quality of waste.
The ALMANAC project is co-funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no 609081, objective ICT-2013.1.4 'A reliable, smart and secure Internet of Things for Smart Cities'. Duration: 1st September 2013 to 31st August 2016.
